As part of the PRS evidence based review series, this well written review summarises the up-to-date knowledge regarding the surgical and non-surgical management of the common facial skin cancers. The review is limited to BCC, SCC, MM and Merkel Cell tumours, but also covers the premalignant actinic keratoses and Bowen’s disease. Most trainee plastic surgeons would do well to familiarise themselves with this information for routine clinical practice and especially before sitting the exam. Nevertheless, even the experienced clinician may find a few useful learning points, if not just the satisfaction of knowing that their knowledge is up-to-date. It’s a pity that the evidence base for the timing of recurrence and therefore the recommended duration of follow-up is not included.
